With the 2008 farm bill working its way through conference committees, members of the Land O’Lakes Policies and Resolutions Committee set out to Washington, D.C. recently to promote a variety of policies on behalf of the co-op and its members.
The fly-in, May 5-7, included nearly 30 formal congressional office visits, as well as meals with elected officials. The primary topics discussed, among others, included promoting completion of the farm bill, supporting a food safety bill, opposing the Clean Water Restoration Act and promoting a pair of international development bills.
Kicking off the fly-in Monday evening, members of the P&R Committee hosted a dinner for Rep. Allen Boyd, D-Fla., at Agraria Restaurant in Georgetown, while others attended a National Milk Producers Federation dinner for Rep. Frank Lucas, R-Okla.
Prior to beginning the congressional office visits Tuesday afternoon, the group attended a briefing at the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives. NCFC staff and representatives from Land O’Lakes International Development and NMPF were among those present at the briefing.
Following the office visits, the P&R Committee again hosted a dinner with a legislative guest. This time it was Rep. Randy Kuhl, R-N.Y., at The Monocle Restaurant on Capitol Hill.
Wednesday morning, the group split into teams to attend three separate breakfast events. The first was with Rep. Tom Latham, R-Iowa, the second was with Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., and the third was with Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa.
At the conclusion of the breakfasts, the group set out for the last few office visits and wrapped up what was a well-received and encouraging legislative fly-in.
